Clianthus puniceus, commonly called the New Zealand parrot’s beak or kaka beak, is native to New Zealand. It is celebrated for its cascading clusters of brilliant scarlet, parrot-shaped flowers and glossy green pinnate leaves. Once rare in the wild, it’s now widely cultivated for its striking ornamental beauty and cultural significance.

Plant Type

Climber

Clianthus puniceus is an evergreen shrub belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is a fast-growing, woody climber or sprawling bush that can be trained on trellises or walls. The plant is prized for its dramatic floral display and makes a bold statement in coastal or Mediterranean-style gardens.

Mature Height

150–250 cm tall (about 5–8 feet)

Clianthus puniceus typically grows 150–250 cm tall (about 5–8 feet) and can spread equally wide. With support, it can be trained to climb higher, forming a dense, arching shrub or small vine. Its pendulous red flowers create a spectacular display from late winter through spring, attracting nectar-feeding birds.

Light Requirements

Partial shade – Full sun

This plant thrives in full sun, which promotes abundant flowering and compact growth. It tolerates light shade but may produce fewer blooms. Choose a warm, sheltered spot protected from cold winds and frost. Sunny walls or trellised courtyards provide ideal conditions for healthy growth and prolific flowering.

Water Requirements

Moderate

Clianthus puniceus prefers well-drained soil kept moderately moist. Once established, it shows some drought tolerance but benefits from regular watering during dry spells or flowering. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as root rot can occur. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintain even conditions around the root zone.

Cold Hardiness

-2 °C (28 °F)

Clianthus puniceus is hardy to about -2 °C (28 °F), suitable for USDA Zones 9–11. It dislikes prolonged frost or freezing winds. In cooler climates, it’s best grown in containers or against warm, protected walls. Frost damage may occur in severe winters, but plants often recover when temperatures rise.
