Clematis urophylla ‘Winter Beauty’ is an evergreen clematis originally derived from Chinese mountain regions, where conditions favour cool, bright winters. It produces elegant, nodding white bell-shaped flowers during the coldest months, often blooming from December through March. The glossy, leathery foliage remains attractive year-round, giving it strong architectural value. Its combination of winter flowers and evergreen leaves makes it an excellent choice for adding off-season structure and subtle fragrance to sheltered gardens.

Plant Type

Evergreen twining climber

This cultivar is an evergreen, twining climber that clings by wrapping its leaf petioles around supports. Unlike herbaceous clematis types, it retains its foliage throughout winter and grows steadily rather than in large spring surges. It flowers on the current seasons growth and benefits from hard pruning in spring. Its evergreen habit and winter-flowering nature make it particularly valuable for brightening shaded walls, pergolas, and archways during darker months.

Mature Height

3–4 metres (10–13 feet)

Clematis urophylla ‘Winter Beauty’ typically reaches 3–4 metres (10–13 feet) once mature. Growth is steady rather than rapid, achieving full height over several seasons. In ideal conditions with a sturdy support, it may exceed 4 m, though regular shaping helps maintain a neat outline. Its moderate height makes it versatile for smaller gardens, where overly vigorous clematis may overwhelm available space. The evergreen leaves ensure year-round coverage even at maximum height.

Light Requirements

Full sun to partial shade

This cultivar performs best in full sun or partial shade, following the classic clematis rule: “heads in the sun, roots in the shade.” Sun encourages heavier flowering in winter, while partial shade helps protect foliage from summer scorch. Sheltered south or west-facing walls are ideal, providing warmth that encourages earlier and more abundant winter blooms. Avoid deep shade, which can significantly reduce flowering and cause sparse leaf growth.

Water Requirements

Moist but well drained

Clematis urophylla ‘Winter Beauty’ prefers consistently moist but well-drained soil. Regular watering during its main growing period (spring to early autumn) supports strong root establishment and healthy evergreen foliage. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps the root zone cool. In winter, water sparingly—excess moisture in cold periods can lead to root stress. Once mature, it tolerates short dry spells, though prolonged drought can reduce future flowering.

Cold Hardiness

–10 °C (14 °F)

This evergreen clematis is hardy to around –10 °C (14 °F), making it suitable for most sheltered UK gardens. While the woody framework is generally resilient, the evergreen foliage may suffer cosmetic damage in severe freezes or drying winds. Planting against a warm wall improves winter resilience and encourages more prolific early-season blooms. Avoid planting in frost pockets, as prolonged freezing can reduce flowering performance the following season.

Propagation tips

Propagation is most reliable through semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer, selecting non-flowering shoots with firm bases and soft tips. Root these in a humid, warm environment with good airflow. Layering is another easy technique—bend a flexible stem to the soil, secure it, and allow it to root naturally before detaching. Seed propagation is rare for this cultivar and unlikely to produce true-to-type plants, making vegetative methods the preferred approach.
