Aralia elata

A beautiful and very desirable shrub or small tree that is more commonly known as the ‘Angelica Tree’. Aralia elata produces very large divided leaves on a woody spiny stem, very much like its relative Brassaopsis mitis. This fast growing plant can increase in height by in excess of 1 meter in a single season, and tolerates hard pruning extremely well. The rapid growth of Aralia elata makes it a fantastic foliage plant for any garden, though it really comes into its own as a showpiece plant in tropical or jungle style gardens. Aralia elata is hardy throughout most of the UK, surviving temperatures down to -15ºC. In winter the spiny stems add architectural interest and height to a garden. In Japan the emerging leaf buds are eaten.
