Plant Type:
Shrub
With its origins in the cool, high-altitude Andes of Colombia to Chile, Brugmansia sanguinea offers unique ornamental beauty. Unlike its fragrant cousins, its narrow, pendulous, trumpet-shaped flowers, up to 25cm long, display vibrant, non-scented hues of red, orange, and yellow, sometimes with green bases and yellow veins, attracting hummingbirds in its native habitat
Cold Hardiness:
Half-hardy
Eventual Height:
2.5-4m
Brugmansia sanguinea, or the red angel’s trumpet, typically reaches a mature height of 2.5 to 4 metres (8 to 13 feet) in the UK, sometimes even taller in very mild conditions or over many years. It develops into an open shrub or small tree.
Light requirements:
Full sun
Brugmansia sanguinea thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it appreciates plenty of light for optimal flowering, in hotter UK locations, partial shade, especially during the hottest part of the day, can prevent leaf scorch and help the plant retain moisture. A warm, sheltered spot is ideal.
Water Requirements:
Frequent in warm weather
Brugmansia sanguinea needs consistently moist, well-drained soil, especially during its active growth in warmer months. Water generously when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, potentially daily in hot weather, particularly for container plants. Reduce watering significantly in winter when growth slows. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
