A vigorous and shade tolerant shrub with large furry green leaves and thick stems. The delicate looking white flowers of Sparmannia africana feature a red and yellow centre that slowly moves to open when tickled, possibly an evolutionary feature to allow pollinating insects in. Remains evergreen in mild winters and regrows from the roots after temperatures down to -3ºC. This impressive plant will easily reach heights of 5m in one season if provided with plenty of feed and water. It is a native to open woodland in South Africa and Madagascar where it grows into an impressive sized plant.

Although Sparmannia africana is native to the warm regions of South Africa and Madagascar, we have seen it tolerate light frosts here in the UK. In temperatures down to -3ºC it will loose its leaves ad reshoot in the following spring.
