Plant Type:
Tree Fern
Dicksonia antarctica is the hardiest tree fern we can grow in the UK. Over several years it grows to form a thick trunk.
Cold Hardiness:
Hardy
Dicksonia antarctica is a very hardy fern, though young plants will benefit from protection from severe cold. In lasting cold the green leaves may be frost damaged, but large new fronds will emerge in spring. Protect the ‘knuckle’ of new fronds from cold in winter.
Eventual Height:
3m+
Dicksonia antarctica will grow to reach impressive heights, though this will take a number of years. Young plants make fantastic large leaved ferns for shaded spots in any garden.
Light requirements:
Full Shade / Partial Shade
Dicksonia antarctica is a shade loving plant, though it will also grow will in partial shade.
Water Requirements:
Frequent in summer
Caring for this plant:
Spring/Summer care: In summer water the plant frequently, this will ensure the leaves stay healthy. Fertilise Dicksonia antarctica plants once a week during spring and summer with a liquid feed to promote healthy growth.
Autumn/Winter care: In winter we recommend protecting the ‘knuckle’ of new fronds from cold. Just cover with straw or horticultural fleece.
