Plant Type:
Air plant
Tillandsia usneoides, commonly called Spanish moss, is an epiphytic air plant. Spanish moss has no roots, and grows in the wild by hanging from the branches of larger shrubs and trees,
Cold Hardiness:
Tender
Tillandsia usneoides has survived light frosts in the Grow Paradise garden, showing tolerance of lower temperatures. However, due to it’s warm climate origins we would say that Tillandsia usneoides is tender and should be overwintered indoors.
Eventual Length:
30cm
The silver stems of Spanish moss can trail to lengths of 3m if given the time and space! However, we would recommend keeping it in shorter and fuller clumps for maximum effect.
Light requirements:
Full sun /Partial shade
In its natural habitat Tillandsia usneoides hangs from the canopy branches of large oak trees where it is exposed to sun and partial shade.
Water Requirements:
Low
We recommend watering air plants weekly. To water Tillandsia usneoides you can spray the leaves with water or submerge the whole plant in a bucket water for 30 mins and then hang it to drip dry.
Caring for this plant:
Drape Tillandsia usneiodes over branches in the warmer months where it can soak up moisture from rainfall. In the colder months, bring this air plant indoors and water weekly with distilled water or rainwater. Either submerge in water for 1 minute of mist with a spray bottle.
